Artist Steve Lawrence, 36, was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. A self-taught artist with a classical education, Steve--who studied art history in Rome and both photography and gross anatomy in college-gravitated naturally to art production.
It is often said that art is merely an extension of the artist, and according to one art critic, "with Steve Lawrence that is definitely the case. His art is bright, outgoing and fun - when you see it you stop, look and smile." Steve's work is at once primitive and sophisticated. His specialized training and colorful background operates almost subliminally throughout his artwork. Steve's first ventures into art began after experimenting with spray cans and graffiti in college, prompting an explosion of creativity. Steve's art includes many references to the human form and biology, influenced by his Bachelor of Science in Corporate Fitness. Additional study in television, radio, and film as well as a passion for music are also evident in his work both explicitly in content and implicitly in the dynamic movement suggested in many of his cityscape paintings.
In the last 2 years, Steve's art has been featured in magazines and newspapers throughout Texas - he has participated in events benefiting the M.A.C. / Kitchen Dog Theatre, Bryan's House, and DIFFA. Steve's work has been featured in over 20 venues throughout North Texas and he has collectors throughout the United States and Europe.
Prompted by his anatomy studies, Steve began his artistic journey by sculpting geometric shapes and abstract human figures with aluminum and wire in 1998. The following year, Steve turned his attention to painting for the first time. He is primarily recognized for his large canvas paintings with content that includes pulsating cityscapes and dream-like, surreal landscapes, described by one writer as "immediately recognizable as 'a Lawrence.' "
Through a unique process of applying plaster and acrylic paint on board, Steve achieves original textural effects with electric coloration. These 'color fields' are favored by both personal and commercial collectors because of their ability to either blend into or command attention in their space.
Steve consistently explores new materials and techniques--working with both abstract and figurative subjects. He is expanding his metal work and currently experimenting with video art.
