"I am moved by nature-especially nature unspoiled by human intervention. I paint scenes which bring me a sense of inner peace, joy and/or awe. I love mountains, canyons, lakes, rapids and especially clouds. My paintings reflect my personal encounter with the places which impress me. I usually work from reference photos I have taken of the subject, supplemented by notes on color and/or sketches. I use a lot of glazes to build up richness of color and the effect of light coming from within the canvas. The fast drying time of acrylics is very helpful in achieving this."
After retirement as Director of Human Resources and Labor Relations from Ameritech Communications in Chicago in 1988, Ernest and his wife, Rosemary, moved to Sunset Bay on Lake Hamilton just outside of Hot Springs, AR.
Ernest started drawing again, something he had not done since childhood. In 1991, he decided to try painting. "I immediately fell in love with the process of putting paint on canvas (or paper). I started reading everything I could find on painting, color mixing and color theory. I wish I had done this my whole life, but thank goodness I discovered it when I did."
Ernest has a B.A. degree Magna cum Laude in Literature and Philosophy from Hendrix College in Conway, AR and a M.A. degree in Philosophy from Northwestern University. He is represented by Gallery Central in Hot Springs.
